  • I just left my job and walked out after they canceled my lunch break

I've been working there for 5 months. I've never been late, and I was usually there about 20 minutes before my shift started. This morning was rough, and I was upset and not in the best mood, and in the end I was 8 minutes late to work. The manager brought me into his
  • office and started yelling at me, asking why I didn't call to tell him I'd be late. I honestly told him I didn't even think to call, because I knew it would only be a few minutes.
  • They weren't going to let the boss get away with it.

We went back and forth for a bit, and then he told me I wasn't allowed to take a lunch break since I was late and they were really slammed. I hadn't brought any food with me, so I asked him if I could at least run and grab something small before starting my shift. He said yes, but only on the condition that he deduct 40 minutes from my pay.
  • I said fine and left to "get food." It's been almost two hours since I left and I still haven't gone back. The manager just called me, and I told him I quit. Not regretting it (so far?) Wish me luck!!
  • A female employee smiles and raises her arm while walking down stairs outside.
  • Commenters pointed out that breaks are often a legal requirement.

Necessary_Baker_7458 I don't blame you. Some employment can be shabby. Breaks and rest periods are allowed by most if not all countries. In the states and canada I know it's required. Company can get in huge trouble
  • if they refuse to let employees take them. This sounded like retaliation of your manager being a bit of a hard aff by refusing you a lunch for being late. Any shift above 5.5 hrs requires a lunch by u.s. federal law (if in states).
  • XXRTDxx You don't want to work at a place like that. Yes you were late and should have called. They don't get to punish you by deducting hours. or withholding a lunch. Assuming the manager isn't the highest person there or this is a chain of some sort, might be
  • worth it to contact someone higher up. Let them know the manager threatened you with a punishment that is (most likely) breaking labor laws.
  • Some argued there is no excuse for a manager to raise their voice.

txa1265 Any manager who yells at employees is a boss and terrible human, using their power as an excuse for ab... e.
  • Old Till2431 Nah, they're your boss. Not your mother. Every job I've ever had, I've always made it clear...youre the boss. Not my mother.
  • The employee provided a valuable lesson.

Past_Gear_4310 I love that for you. Hopefully he learns from this and treats the next one better
  • Top-Swordfish3512 I don't blame you. However moving forward always call even if you are going to be 1 second late. As a former manager, every minute past start time is one I have to start scrambling to figure who to call or who was going to need to stay late.
  • NeartAgusOnoir So many arrogant managers do crop like this. My current supervisor is a DB, a full on bag of used ones at that. Once I find a new job I intend to quit. Managers make or break a good company
